As

The A exists as both a functional character and a universal symbol of language itself, a fundamental element of human communication in either case. In using just the isolated A, the letter is stripped of linguistic meaning and instead becomes an art object, recognizable only for its silhouette.

As the As in As are warped, legibility persists while the geometric structure of the character and its repetition generates a mesmerizing optical illusion of expansion and collapse. The letters transcend their traditional role as carriers of meaning to become vectors of movement, creating a dynamic visual rhythm across the composition.

The work demands to be experienced at multiple distances: from afar, it presents as a bold, unified graphic composition, while closer inspection reveals that the modularity of the elements is echoed in their medium: 132 Ledger Stax arranged in a precise grid, creating a canvas grander than the sum of its parts.

Like the artist’s earlier work, Twos, As transforms the familiar into the monumental. It celebrates how discrete everyday units can coalesce into something greater than their individual parts and reveal latent beauty in the seemingly mundane.

The piece was shown in collaboration with Refraction in Paris during February 2025 in the Ledger lobby. 132 Ledger Stax were applied to a three-faced grid structure designed by Craig Barrow.
